If you’ve ever dealt with stress for more than the few a days or hours before a big job interview or other event, you know that it can negatively impact your body. People under stress experience head and body aches, struggle to maintain a typical sleep schedule, and are often at greater risk for health issues as the immune system is overtaxed in bodies with an elevated level of stress. Unfortunately, your smile isn’t immune to stress either. For many people, oral health issues related to stress are found during regular preventive dentistry visits, and for some, this is a wakeup call that encourages them to make some changes in their daily life and reduce stress levels. Some stress can’t be avoided, but the long term impact on oral and overall health can be detrimental. If you’re experiencing high levels of stress at home, work, or school, finding different ways to manage your stresses may be an important part of protecting your smile and overall health. In this blog, we review some of the common oral health conditions diagnosed in people who are under stress.

The Top 7 Causes of Gum Tissue Recession

August 4, 2019

Dr. McCarl and dental assistant treating patient

When you look in the mirror, are you suddenly seeing a “toothy” grin where you used to see a healthy smile with equal amounts of tooth and gum tissue? Are you suddenly struggling with sensitive teeth? You may be dealing with receding gums. While many people think of dental problems as relating to only teeth, soft tissue health is just as important to the overall appearance and function of your smile. Gum tissue recession is extremely common and needs to be monitored as it reflects the attachment of the gums to the teeth and underlying bone. Like many other oral health conditions, preventive dentistry, routine care, and understanding the underlying causes are the easiest way to avoid recession.

How Sleep Apnea Affects Your Heart

July 6, 2019

Doctor holding a heartSleep apnea is a condition that causes you to stop breathing for ten or more seconds during sleep. Protecting Your Smile with Dental Sealants

April 7, 2018

When it comes to protecting smiles from tooth decay, we encourage all of our dental patients to do their best to brush thoroughly, floss carefully, and of course, keep up with regular preventive dental checkups. When it comes to our kids’ smiles, it can be more of a struggle to keep them healthy. Dental professionals and parents work hard to teach children to remove plaque buildup and clean their smiles thoroughly every day, but even the most diligent parents may not always have time to double check their children’s teeth every time they brush. What can you do to improve your child’s oral health (or your own) quickly and comfortably? Ask your dental hygienist or dentist about dental sealants.

Help Your Greenbelt Dentists Recycle Toothbrushes

January 9, 2018

Help Us Keep Greenbelt Green! Recycle toothbrushes and oral care packages!

Please recycle toothbrushes along with their packaging and empty toothpaste tubes. You may take used toothbrushes, plastic packaging, toothpaste tubes and their caps and empty dental floss containers to the City of Greenbelt, Public Works Department. Did you know that you should replace your toothbrush every 3 months? According to the American Dental Association, after 3-4 months, toothbrushes become worn out and frayed and may lose their effectiveness. Their dental research shows that new toothbrushes remove more plaque than old ones.

How to Recycle Toothbrushes and Other Oral Care Products

At McCarl Dental Group we have participated in the Greenbelt recycling program since it started and are excited to embrace this new recycling program for oral care products. We encourage our dental patients to recycle empty toothpaste tubes and caps, toothbrushes, toothpaste cartons and toothbrush outer packaging and dental floss containers. There are new inside bins at the City of Greenbelt, Public Works Department, who participates with TerraCycle, a recycling company that specializes in recycling hard-to-recycle waste.

We encourage all of our dental patients and Greenbelt residents to recycle all of the oral hygiene supplies listed above. Please note: Electric toothbrushes, battery toothbrushes, and/or their parts are not recyclable through this program.

Our City of Greenbelt is a certified Sustainable Maryland Community and does a great job helping residents minimize their environmental impact through recycling. The community has been in partnership with the Green Team since 2014 and has been surveyed by Green ACES (Advisory Committee on the Environment and Sustainability) for decades.

Please help us actively promote and model environmental sustainability and contribute to a green lifestyle.

With best wishes for a greener Greenbelt and a Happy New Year,
