Free Head and Neck Cancer Screenings at Local Johns Hopkins Head and Neck Cancer Centers

During the 10-minute screening a Johns Hopkins physician will examine your neck, throat and mouth for signs and symptoms of head or neck cancer including sores that do not heal; a lump or thickening in the cheek or lip; white or red patches on the gums, tongue, tonsil or lining of the mouth; chronic sore throat; difficulty in chewing or swallowing; or a lump or mass in the neck.

Oral, head and neck cancers are the sixth most common form of cancer in the United States, with 40,000 cases diagnosed annually. At highest risk for these cancers are smokers and tobacco users. However, oral, head and neck cancers in non-smokers is a growing problem. Hopkins physicians are seeing an increase in oral cancer diagnosis in young people without a history of alcohol or tobacco use. According to otolaryngologist Wayne Koch, MD, 30 to 50 percent of head and neck cancer diagnosis today are HPV-related. “We’re finding these cancers located in the tonsils and backs of tongues,” he says. “And we’re seeing lots of patients who are in their 30s and 40s.” Most people do not have symptoms and tumors aren’t usually discovered until they have spread to lymph nodes in the neck

WARNING SIGNS FOR ORAL CANCER:
sores that do not heal or white or red patches on the gums, tongue, tonsils or mouth; a lump or thickening in the cheek, lip or neck; chronic sore throat; difficulty in chewing or swallowing, pain radiating to one or both ears; or change in tonsil size.
