Family History of Drs. McCarl, McCarl, McCarl & McCarl
Dr. James W. McCarl was appointed by the federal government to establish a private practice of dentistry in 1937 in the new government town of Greenbelt. He practiced for 18 years in 30-A Ridge Road, just across from the present office. The four unit 30 Court of Ridge was the Medical Center for many years. In 1954, he purchased 28 A&B Ridge, in anticipation of his two sons joining him in practice. He practiced until the time of his death in 1967 at the age of 71.

Dr. J. Taylor McCarl joined his father in practice in 1955. They remodeled 28 B into dental offices on both floors, while he lived in 28 A, until his brother graduated and joined them in practice. He practiced until his untimely death in 1988 at the age of 59.

Dr. Clayton McCarl, Sr. joined his father and brother in 1956. They removed the center walls between the two houses to make one large dental building. The three practiced together for 13 years. Clayton and J. Taylor practiced together for 32 years. Dr. Clayton has two sons, a daughter and a nephew in practice. Dr. Clayton Sr., was President of the Maryland State Dental Association in 1981 as his father had been in 1944. Dr. Clayton McCarl Sr. retired from dentistry in 1998 to spend his golden years with his wife Jane.

Sally McCarl Moore graduated from the baccalaureate dental hygiene program and joined the practice in 1980. She and her husband, Brian, live in Crofton. Her three children are all grown and all attend the University of Maryland.



Dr. Clayton McCarl, Jr.

Dr Clayton McCarlAfter completing his undergraduate studies at the University of Maryland, College Park, Dr. Clayton McCarl Jr. received his Doctorate of Dental Surgery at the University of Maryland Dental School. A Fellow in the Academy of General Dentistry, Dr. McCarl is certified in dental laser therapy and often lectures to the Greater Metropolitan Research Group.

Practicing since 1984, Dr. McCarl holds membership in the following professional organizations: Maryland State Dental Association, American Dental Association, Southern Maryland Dental Society, the Pierre Fauchard Academy and the Academy of General Dentistry.

Dr. McCarl and his wife, Lisa, have three children: Clayton III (22), Drew (21) and Ashley (20). In his spare time, he enjoys exercise, family activities and is an avid University of Maryland sports fan. Go Terps!!

Dr. James (Jay) McCarl

Dr Jay McCarlAfter obtaining his B.A. from Gettysburg College, Dr. Jay McCarl went on to earn his D.D.S. degree from the University of Maryland Dental School. Dr. Jay is a Fellow in the Academy of General Dentistry and attended the Boston University Implant Symposium.

In practice since 1984, Dr. Jay is an active member of the Maryland State Dental Association, American Dental Association, Southern Maryland Dental Society, the Pierre Fauchard Academy, American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry and Sulzer Implant Seminar Series. He often schedules speaking engagements on dental health and nutrition at area schools.

Dr Jay and his wife, Kimberley, have two children, Jonah and Tori. When away from the office, he coaches many children's sports teams and is the co-chair of the Annapolis Area Christian School Golf Fundraiser. Dr. Jay has also helped author a book on the history of Greenbelt.

Dr. David J. McCarl

Dr David McCarlDr. David McCarl earned his B.A. in Biological Science from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County before advancing to the University of Maryland Dental School, where he earned his Doctorate of Dental Surgery.

In practice since 1989, Dr. McCarl has completed an advanced restorative clerkship and was the recipient of the Quintessence Award for Restorative Dentistry. He stays abreast of the latest advances in his field through active memberships with the American Dental Association, Maryland State Dental Association and the Southern Maryland Dental Society.

Dr. McCarl and his wife, Pam, have three children and reside in Howard County with their two dogs, eight rabbits and one parrot. In his spare time, he enjoys outdoor sports, mountain biking, hiking, camping, carpentry and volunteering with Oak Ridge Community Church.

Dr. Monica Mattson

Dr Monica Mattson

After being awarded a Bachelor in Science from Miami University, Oxford, Ohio, Dr. Monica Mattson attended Case Western Reserve University School of Dental Medicine.

Dr. Mattson was commissioned as an Officer in the U.S. Navy in 1995. She completed a General Practice Residency in Dentistry at the Naval Hospital of Camp Pendleton, CA. During her eight years in the Navy, Dr. Mattson served aboard the USS Shenandoah, Dental Department Head on the USS Germantown, Sasebo, Japan, and Annex Dental Clinic Director at Naval Air Station Lemoore, CA.

Dr. Mattson joined our practice in 2003. She is the recipient of numerous awards and honoraries including: Omicron Kappa Upsilon, National Dental Honorary; Pierre Fauchard Academy Award; Quintessence Award; and the Eleanor Bushee AAWD, Senior Women Dental Award. Monica is a member of the Academy of General Dentistry, and the Greater Washington Academy of Women Dentists.

A pet lover, Dr. Mattson has three cats and a dog. In her spare time, she enjoys outdoor recreation and traveling with her family and friends.
